Bedford Hills Correctional Facility: Educational Center

About half of the inmates in the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility have not completed high school, 85% read below the twelfth-grade level and 32% read below sixth-grade level. Recently, all public funds for college courses were discontinued in the NYS penal system, and other educational programs have been severely curtailed by massive budget and staff cuts. A privately funded college program was started in 1997. Volunteers are much needed for the college and college-bound programs.

What Our Church Does: Financial support; members volunteer.

What You Can Do:
  • Tutor, teach reading
  • Teach games or needle crafts to teens and young adults (knitting, crocheting, quilting)
  • Instruct in creative writing, music, drama, arts and crafts
  • Contribute money or practical items for inmates and their children
When: Ongoing

Volunteers: Adult
