Patrick was born and raised in Ninety-Six, South Carolina, a small town in the Piedmont region of the state. His heritage has given him a slight southern drawl, an appetite for boiled peanuts and an almost fanatical devotion to college football. He enjoys reading, watching movies, visiting New York City, and going out to eat with friends.
More than anything else, however, he treasures the time he spends with his family. Patrick and his wife, Deb, met while they were students at Princeton Theological Seminary. They have been married for twenty-nine years. Deb, a native of Pennsylvania, is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and serves as a chaplain at a retirement community in Delaware. Their son, Nathan, is twenty-one years old. He recently graduated from college and will work for a year before pursuing a Ph.D. in intellectual history.
In his thirty-one years of ministry, Patrick has led churches as small as 50 and as large as 1600. He has also trained as a pastoral counselor, studied improv, and developed a passion for the Dones, those who have been hurt by the church. He just released a book about this work - Meeting Jesus at Starbucks.
